Host an Online Class with Google Meet: Setup and Teaching Checklist

You do not need a complicated setup to teach something useful online. You do need a clear lesson, a meeting your students can join and a plan for helping them follow along. Here is my practical starting checklist for a Google Meet class.
This article was first published in 2023 and refreshed in October 2026. Google Meet features vary by account, plan and administrator settings. Check your actual account before promising a class size, duration, recording or breakout rooms.
1. Check the teaching account and available features
Use the Google Account you intend to teach from. A business email address alone does not prove which Google Meet features are included. Google explains that access depends on the Workspace edition and account settings; check the current Meet feature guide before planning your session.
2. Schedule the class and confirm the details
Create the class meeting in Google Meet or Google Calendar. Check the date, start time, time zone and meeting link. For the current steps, use Google’s scheduling instructions.
3. Invite the right participants
Send the confirmed meeting details to your enrolled students through the communication method you agreed on. Include what they should prepare and how to ask for help joining. Do not post a private class link publicly or expose everyone’s email addresses in a shared message.
4. Prepare a lesson students can follow
Choose one outcome for the class. Prepare your agenda, examples and supporting materials around that outcome. Keep the text readable, include a short practice activity and decide how students will ask questions. Have a backup copy of your notes in case screen sharing fails.
5. Test the meeting before class
Open the scheduled meeting early. Check your microphone, camera, internet connection and presentation. Make sure you are signed into the intended account. Review the entry and host controls available to you using Google’s host-control guidance, and practice before students arrive.
6. Teach, share and check understanding
Share only the material students need to see. Close private tabs and notifications first. Pause for questions and use a short activity to check understanding. Breakout-room creation and other advanced tools depend on your edition and settings; do not build the lesson around a feature you have not tested.
Before you offer or record a class
Confirm the class length and capacity your account supports, what students will receive and the joining instructions. Do a private practice session first. If you plan to record, explain that before class, get the permissions your situation requires, and decide who may access the recording. This article does not include a live class booking or guarantee that recording is available in your account.
