Best Generator for WAPA Power Outages in the USVI: My GENMAX Setup & Safety Guide

The power has gone out more than four times in less than 24 hours here in St. Thomas.
If you live in the Virgin Islands, you already know this is not unusual. WAPA does not give warnings. One minute you have power, the next you are sitting in the dark hoping it comes back before the food in your fridge goes bad and the house turns into a sauna.
I have been through enough outages to know that being prepared is not optional here, it is just smart living. Last year my daughters and I set up a dual fuel inverter generator and it changed how we handle outages entirely. Some of the items below I own and use personally. Others I researched and added to my Amazon list because they belong in every USVI home.

The Generator I Actually Use: Genmax Dual Fuel Inverter Generator
I bought this myself back in 2024. My daughters and I set it up together and it has been one of the best decisions I made for this house.
During Hurricanes Irma and Maria, the generator we had was heavy, loud, had no wheels or display, and depended on a pull start that did not always cooperate. I needed help just to move it. Later, borrowing a smaller inverter generator showed me how much easier backup power could be. When WAPA outages became even more frequent, I invested in this GENMAX because it gave me that inverter convenience plus remote and push-button starting, wheels and a telescoping handle, a readable display, familiar household outlets, and dual-fuel flexibility—features that matter when I am handling an outage as a single mother.
It runs quieter than a traditional generator, light enough to move around on its own wheels, and runs on gas or propane, whichever you have available. A Safer Temporary Cord Layout
Use the generator’s large three-prong TT-30R outlet only with a matching TT-30P distribution cord or box that has proper outlet protection. From there, run one continuous outdoor-rated 12/3 extension cord to each area, keep the refrigerator on its own dedicated cord, and keep every connection dry, raised, and protected from rain. Do not daisy-chain extension cords or ordinary power strips. More outlets make connections more convenient, but they do not increase the generator’s total capacity.
Operate a portable generator fully outdoors, at least 20 feet from doors, windows, and vents, with the exhaust pointed away from the home. Use working battery-powered carbon monoxide (CO) alarms near sleeping areas. Never run a generator on an attached or enclosed porch.

Running a generator without the right accessories is how things go wrong. These three items are non-negotiable.

Add the running watts of everything you plan to use at the same time, then allow extra capacity for the largest motor-starting surge—often a refrigerator, freezer, or water pump. Check each appliance label and your generator manual; do not size a system from outlet count alone.
Can I run a portable generator on a porch if the exhaust points outward?
A porch is not considered a safe operating location. CDC guidance says to operate a fuel-burning portable generator fully outdoors, more than 20 feet from windows, doors, and vents, and to use battery-powered or battery-backup carbon monoxide alarms inside. Keep the generator and all connections dry.
Can a portable power station be used indoors?
A battery power station creates no combustion exhaust and can generally be used indoors according to the manufacturer’s instructions. It is not the same as a gasoline or propane generator, and its usable runtime depends on battery capacity and the devices connected.
What should a Virgin Islands home keep ready for outages and hurricanes?
At minimum: safe lighting, rechargeable fans, a radio or trusted update source, drinking water and storage, a plan to keep food cold, charged power banks, carbon monoxide alarms if you use fuel-burning equipment, and correctly rated cords and connection covers.
How can I get a generator or large power item shipped to the USVI?
