WAPA Power Outages in the USVI: My GENMAX Setup & Safety Guide

During one stretch of outages in St. Thomas, the power went out more than four times in less than 24 hours. That experience is why I put this guide together. The cover artwork is illustrative and does not show a safe generator placement. Follow the outdoor distance and operating guidance below.
If you live in the Virgin Islands, you know how quickly an outage can change your day. One minute you have power; the next, you are hoping it returns before the food in the fridge gets warm and the house turns into a sauna.
I have been through enough outages to know that having a plan matters. In 2024, my daughters and I set up a dual-fuel inverter generator. Some items below are part of my own setup; others are options I researched. Choose what fits your household, budget and equipment instructions.

The Generator I Actually Use: Genmax Dual Fuel Inverter Generator
I bought this myself back in 2024. My daughters and I set it up together and it has been one of the best decisions I made for this house.
During Hurricanes Irma and Maria, the generator we had was heavy, loud, had no wheels or display, and depended on a pull start that did not always cooperate. I needed help just to move it. Later, borrowing a smaller inverter generator showed me how much easier backup power could be. When WAPA outages became even more frequent, I invested in this GENMAX because it gave me that inverter convenience plus remote and push-button starting, wheels and a telescoping handle, a readable display, familiar household outlets, and dual-fuel flexibility, features that matter when I am handling an outage as a single mother.
It runs quieter than a traditional generator, light enough to move around on its own wheels, and runs on gas or propane, whichever you have available. During our last outage it powered the water pump, refrigerator, internet router, fans in multiple rooms, the TV, and kept all our devices charged. We used extension cords to connect everything. That describes my temporary setup, not a wiring recommendation. A Safer Temporary Cord Layout
The generator has a TT-30R outlet. A distribution cord or box must match the outlet and have suitable protection. Choose every cord for its actual load, length and manufacturer requirements; 12/3 is not a universal answer for every appliance. Keep the refrigerator on a dedicated, correctly rated outdoor cord. Keep connections dry and protected, and do not daisy-chain cords or ordinary power strips. More outlets do not increase capacity.
Operate a fuel-burning generator fully outdoors, more than 20 feet from doors, windows and vents, with exhaust directed away from occupied buildings. Use working battery-powered or battery-backup carbon monoxide alarms near sleeping areas. Never use a generator indoors, in a garage or on an attached or enclosed porch.
This diagram is a planning illustration, not an installation plan. Follow the exact generator and appliance manuals, including grounding and cord requirements. Keep equipment dry without enclosing it. Shut it off and let it cool before refueling. Never power house wiring by plugging a generator into a wall outlet. Household wiring requires a suitable transfer switch and qualified professional installation.

Before You Start: Safety and Accessories
Check the exact generator manual before buying accessories. Suitable cords, working carbon monoxide alarms and a safe fuel plan belong ahead of optional extras. Fuel stabilizer is a storage aid, not a substitute for those basics.
This three-prong TT-30P adapter matches the generator’s TT-30R outlet and provides four household-style 5-15R/5-20R receptacles. It uses 10-gauge wire, has built-in 20-amp circuit breakers, and is ETL listed. Verify the selected Amazon variation and your generator outlet before ordering. More outlets make distribution easier, but they do not increase the generator’s total capacity.

If your generator sits between hurricane seasons the fuel goes stale and it will not start when you need it most. Add stabilizer before you store it. Keeps fuel fresh for up to 24 months.
No Generator? These Keep You Powered
Not everyone is ready to invest in a fuel-burning generator yet. These options cover different backup-power needs, from a high-capacity portable power station to smaller device-charging solutions.
A portable power station, which is not a fuel generator, that stores electricity in a battery. Because it creates no exhaust, it can be used indoors according to the manufacturer’s directions. It can quietly run compatible appliances, lights, and devices, but its runtime is finite and depends on the total load. Recharge it from an approved wall, generator, or compatible solar source.
This solar kit may suit compatible 12V/24V systems, but do not assume it connects directly to every power station. Confirm the voltage, connector, controller, and manufacturer requirements before buying. Solar can reduce how often you need fuel or grid power for smaller charging needs.
Keeps your laptop alive during outages, not just your phone. If you work from home or run a business this one matters.

What I Actually Keep in My House
These are the items I own and use. When the power goes out these are already here and ready.
The most underrated item on this entire list. They screw into your existing light sockets and work like a normal bulb when the power is on. When the power goes out you flip your existing wall switch and they come on automatically. No flashlight, no fumbling in the dark. I have them in every room.
Hands-free lighting for cooking, moving around the house at night, or checking on the generator. I keep multiple in the house.
Better than a flashlight for lighting a whole room. Collapsible and easy to store. I keep one in the kitchen and one in the bedroom.
The heat in the VI during an outage is serious. This runs on a built-in rechargeable battery and doubles as a lantern. I use it overnight when I do not want to run the generator.
For when a major storm takes out both power and water service. I keep mine stored and ready. A personal water filter does not make every water source safe. LifeStraw does not remove salt; do not use it with ocean, sea or brackish water. Virus and chemical protection varies by model. Follow the exact product instructions and current local drinking-water advisories.

No power needed. Life does not stop during an outage. Floors still need cleaning and this gets it done without electricity.
Everything Else Worth Having
These items round out a complete USVI outage preparedness setup. You do not need all of them at once, but knowing what exists and having a plan before the next outage is what separates prepared from scrambling.
This is an indoor power strip, not a generator distribution cord or a substitute for the correctly rated outdoor cords above. Do not chain it to extension cords or use it for high-load appliances. Check the exact manufacturer instructions and the rating of every connected device before use.
Evaporative Personal Air Cooler: a small water-based cooler is not a refrigerant air conditioner. Its effect depends on humidity and airflow; do not count on it to cool a whole room in humid Virgin Islands weather.
Emergency Hand Crank Weather Radio: check the exact model’s charging methods, battery requirements and reception. Keep it charged and test it before an outage.
A bright energy-efficient floor lamp for when you need real lighting, not just a lantern. Low wattage means it runs easily off a power station.

Similar to the above but dimmable. Good for bedroom or living room use when running off backup power and you want to conserve.
Instant Pot Duo Crisp 11-in-1 Air Fryer and Pressure Cooker: check the exact appliance wattage against your available backup capacity. Cooking equipment can be a large load; do not assume it will fit alongside the refrigerator, pump and other devices.
Coleman Vintage 54qt Steel Belted Cooler: plan for ice and use a thermometer to monitor food temperature. Ice retention depends on loading, weather and how often the lid is opened.
When the power has been out for two or three days laundry does not stop. This lets you hand wash clothes in any bucket or tub, no electricity, no machine, no problem. Works well paired with the spin mop bucket.
How to Get These Shipped to the Virgin Islands

What size generator do I need for a refrigerator, fans, lights, and internet?
Add the running watts of everything you plan to use at the same time, then allow extra capacity for the largest motor-starting surge, often a refrigerator, freezer, or water pump. Check each appliance label and your generator manual; do not size a system from outlet count alone.
Can I run a portable generator on a porch if the exhaust points outward?
A porch is not considered a safe operating location. CDC guidance says to operate a fuel-burning portable generator fully outdoors, more than 20 feet from windows, doors, and vents, and to use battery-powered or battery-backup carbon monoxide alarms inside. Keep the generator and all connections dry.
Can a portable power station be used indoors?
A battery power station creates no combustion exhaust and can generally be used indoors according to the manufacturer’s instructions. It is not the same as a gasoline or propane generator, and its usable runtime depends on battery capacity and the devices connected.
What should a Virgin Islands home keep ready for outages and hurricanes?
At minimum: safe lighting, rechargeable fans, a radio or trusted update source, drinking water and storage, a plan to keep food cold, charged power banks, carbon monoxide alarms if you use fuel-burning equipment, and correctly rated cords and connection covers.
How can I get a generator or large power item shipped to the USVI?
