Have you heard of using tradelines to help build your credit score? This is what I’ve learned so far: being an authorized user can affect your credit history, but a better score is not guaranteed. Paying a stranger for a temporary account listing brings a different set of risks.

What is a tradeline?

A tradeline is an account entry on a credit report. When people talk about “buying tradelines,” they usually mean paying to be added as an authorized user on someone else’s credit-card account. That is different from opening and managing your own account.

How authorized-user credit piggybacking works

A primary cardholder can add another person as an authorized user. If the issuer reports that relationship to the credit bureaus, the account may appear in the authorized user’s credit file. Ask the issuer how it reports authorized users before relying on that arrangement. Experian explains the two forms of piggybacking.

The account’s payment history and balance matter. FICO explains that both positive and negative information can affect an authorized user’s score. Missed payments or high balances can hurt. Recent FICO versions also give these accounts less weight than accounts you manage as the primary borrower.

For-profit piggybacking is a separate risk

Some companies charge to add you to a stranger’s account for a limited time. Experian cautions against this: the arrangement can be expensive, requires personal information and does not build your own repayment experience. Lenders may also question a credit profile inflated through purchased authorized-user status.

I would not treat a promised score increase as proof that this will work for you. No specific point increase, approval or borrowing rate is guaranteed here.

Start with your own credit reports

A practical first step is to review what is already on your reports. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau says you can review each nationwide bureau’s report free weekly through AnnualCreditReport.com. Checking your own report does not lower your score.

If something is wrong, dispute the error with the bureau and the company that supplied it. The FTC’s credit-repair guidance explains that accurate, current negative information cannot simply be erased by a repair company. Be cautious of guaranteed results or demands for upfront payment.
