The 13th annual King of the Wing brought wings, music and community to Magens Bay Beach on St. Thomas on Saturday, June 8, 2024. The event supported Nana Baby Children’s Home. Here is my experience, with the original recap video and 43 photos from the day.

For the event’s own background and later information, visit the King of the Wing Foundation, Inc. The official winners archive lists Nomad’s Bar & Grill in the restaurant category and Electric Factory Energy in the non-restaurant category for 2024.

The wings I tried

First things first, let’s talk wings! I sampled Pineapple Wings and Orange Crush Wings from Frenchie Frenzy, plus guava wings from WTJX. I was also thrilled to find Johnny cake at one of the tables. It paired perfectly with the wings.

Napkins were a must. What I forgot to do was take pictures or videos of the wings. My priority was getting the food into my belly and freeing up my hands. That is the honest food-review moment from this visit!

Parking and shuttles in 2024

For the 2024 event, free shuttles made getting to the beach easier. I noted service from Tutu Park Mall, Fort Christian Parking Lot and UVI in my original recap. Shuttle sponsor Keswick’s 2024 notice confirms its Fort Christian service. These are historical arrangements, not current shuttle or admission instructions.

Rock City, steel pan and the dunk tank

The St. Thomas All Star Steel Pan Orchestra set the island vibe, followed by a performance by the Virgin Islands’ own Rock City. My correction on the original video identifies the orchestra at 0:12. Revisit the steel-pan and Rock City coverage in the recap.

I couldn't resist trying my luck at the dunk tank, aiming to dunk Ivan "Thumpoff" Williams. Despite five unsuccessful attempts, it was all in good fun and for a great cause. The laughter and cheers from the crowd made it worthwhile, even if I didn't manage to dunk him.

A hot day at Magens Bay

It was a scorcher. I was glad I brought my hydration pack, but I wished I had packed a washcloth for the sweat. Even in light, short-sleeved clothing, I felt the heat. Those are my memories from that day, not a current weather advisory.
