What is VI Madras?
The Official Fabric of the US Virgin Islands
The bright, colorful plaid you see — known as US Virgin Islands Madras — is the official madras fabric of the USVI, chosen to celebrate and preserve Virgin Islands heritage in clothing, décor, and culture.
The pattern was designed by local textile artist Debbie Sun of St. Croix. She was commissioned for the project after a grant awarded by Virgin Islands Council on the Arts (VICA), which helped bring this vision to life.
The fabric’s palette is deeply symbolic. Each color was chosen to represent a part of our islands’ culture, environment and history: turquoise for the surrounding Caribbean waters, royal blue for the deep‑sea harbors, pink for conch shells (a historical symbol of freedom), yellow for the national flower of the Virgin Islands (the Ginger‑Thomas), green for the land’s natural resources, white honoring the tradition of flour‑sack clothing, and red for love and strength — reflecting the many flags that have flown over the USVI.
The official adoption of this design was formalized by the territory’s legislature under Act 8424, making this madras a recognized symbol of identity and pride for Virgin Islanders.
Using VI Madras is more than just a style — it’s a way to carry island heritage, history, and spirit with you, whether at home, abroad, or celebrating cultural events.
